Renovate the lighting

Our lighting solutions already meet EPBD requirements

The EPBD is a directive linked to the EU’s climate goals that tightens the requirements for the energy performance of buildings. We’ll help you meet these requirements in a safe, energy-efficient and sustainable way, using proven lighting solutions and extensive experience.

EPBD stands for the “Energy Performance of Buildings Directive” and means that energy performance in buildings is playing an increasingly important role in both new construction and renovation. The aim is to reduce energy consumption and contribute to the EU’s climate targets.

For property owners, it’s a matter of demonstrating how the various parts of the building affect the whole and how energy consumption is tracked over time.

Lighting often has a significant impact on energy consumption and can be improved incrementally. With the right measures, lighting can help meet the EPBD requirements without the need for major interventions.

For many properties, there is clear potential to reduce energy consumption by reviewing the lighting. This might involve upgrading existing luminaires, adding smart control or better tailoring the lighting to how the premises are actually used.

Energy-efficient lighting is not just about lower energy consumption, but also about improved performance, a longer service life and a more sustainable solution for long-term management. In this context, renovating lighting often yields clear benefits in the form of reduced energy consumption and improved operational performance.

The EPBD is being implemented in phases and will affect property owners over the course of several years. Energy performance, monitoring and documentation requirements are gradually being tightened up for both renovation and new construction projects.

By working smart today, it will be easier to meet these requirements at the right pace and make long-term decisions. Renovating the lighting is often a natural first step.

We monitor developments regarding dates and regulations as they are released and keep you updated.

Lighting currently accounts for 15% of a building’s energy consumption, and the latest lighting technology can deliver energy savings of up to 90%. With the right knowledge and experience, we’ll help you to get a clear overview – from kilowatt-hours to GHG emissions – so you can confidently prioritise the right actions.

Three smart choices delivering a 90% energy saving

With high efficiency, constant light output (CLO) and smart control, you can optimise your property’s overall cost and climate impact. In this example you make a 90% energy saving, and by choosing more environmentally friendly materials you also reduce your climate impact by a factor of five.

This example is based on an open-plan office measuring 90 sq m, equipped with 12 luminaires and an operating time of 50,000 hours.

The EPBD in 5 simple steps

The EPBD introduces new requirements, but also creates opportunities to take a more structured approach to a property’s energy performance.

This guide supports your work with EPBD compliance, with a focus on lighting – an area where relatively small measures can deliver clear, measurable results. We help you prioritise the right actions in the right order, wherever you are in the process.

How to optimise and future-proof your property

Renovating your lighting means making the most of what you already have, while optimising and future-proofing existing solutions. Using a structured approach, we help property owners improve energy performance step by step, in line with the EPBD and long-term management strategies.

A simple path to more efficient lighting

Different properties have different conditions. Depending on the current situation, the age of the installations and how the premises are used, the path to improved energy performance will vary. Here are two common approaches where lighting makes a real difference.

Switch to new, modern luminaires

Maximum energy efficiency and future-proof technology. Full control throughout the manufacturing process.

Reuse existing luminaires

The same high quality and excellent light comfort as a new installation. CE marking, warranty (5 years) and reduced environmental impact.

How lighting reuse work

Smart control that reduces unnecessary energy use

With smart control, the lighting is adjusted according to occupancy, daylight and usage. This provides better control, reduced energy consumption and lighting that works where and when it’s actually needed. Smart control is possible whether you’re switching to new, modern luminaires or upgrading existing ones.

Made in Sweden

Locally produced since 1945

By having our production in Sweden, we have full control over the entire process – from development and manufacturing to documentation and follow-up. At the Fagerhult factory, where it all began, we ensure high-quality lighting solutions, clear traceability and performance that stands the test of time, even when standards become more stringent.

6.3 tonnes of CO₂e saved through reuse

When the lighting in Smedjan parking garage was due for an upgrade, Jönköping Municipality chose to reuse existing equipment rather than replace it. With Fagerhult ReLight, 618 luminaires were refurbished, reducing the climate impact of new materials by 6.3 tonnes of CO₂e—while delivering a modern lighting solution built for long-term use.
